In this first instalment of the Larry Bird movie review we will be looking at the timeless classic "Space Jam." A heart stopping tale of someone named Micheal Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes to play a basketball game vs. alien slave traders to determine their freedom.
In what I believe is a work of fiction this movie had alot of promise. Space plus jamming plus Bird, how can you screw that up? I will tell you how you can screw that up. Only having the legend in a couple of scenes! What was the director thinking? He has in Larry, the greatest actor/basketball player of our time, and he's only got a couple of lines! The only explanation i can come up with for this is that, Larry originally had a much larger role in the film but the director could never find him because he was off shooting jumpers and running laps around the set.
Having not really payed attention during the parts that Larry wasn't in, I cant coment too much on the other actors in the film, except of course to say that they sucked. I thought that Jordan was stiff, Bugs Bunny was erratic, and the relationship between the two was very contrived. They were also clearly intimidated by both the presence and overwhelming aura of one Larry Joe Bird.
Now I don't want to be too harsh on this movie because there were some enjoyable parts. The scene with Bird, Jordan and Bill Murray ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LH8qisTVj0 ) was breathtaking and almost moved me to tears due to its depth and unwavering honesty. I also loved the pig with the speech impediment, he was funny and looked delicious.
On a scale of one to ten I give Space Jam a three. On that same scale I give Bird a seventeen.
